New chairman of the Public Utility Commission of Texas sworn in Tuesday

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Former Executive Director of the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) Thomas Gleeson was sworn in as chairman of the commission earlier Tuesday.

Gleeson was appointed to the commission by Gov. Greg Abbott on Jan. 19, 2023, and is set to hold the position until Sept. 1, 2029, according to a news release from PUCT.

The new chairman has worked at the PUCT for more than 15 years and has served in various positions, such as Chief Operating Officer and Director of Finance and Administration.

In a recent statement released by the PUCT, Gleeson said he’s familiar with the agency’s responsibilities because of his extensive experience with the commission, but believes his role as a father is more important to his new position.

“… as a husband, dad, and ratepayer, I know how the decisions we make here impact the daily lives and finances of Texas families,” Gleeson said.

According to the office of the governor, the PUCT is in charge of regulating the state’s electric power, water and telecommunications, and implements legislation when necessary.

Gleeson was the former chairman for both the City of Pflugerville Finance and Budget Committee and the First United Methodist Church of Round Rock Finance Committee.

He is also a graduate of the Governor’s Executive Development Program at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas Austin.

Gleeson currently lives in Pflugerville with his wife, Elisa and three sons.
