AUSTIN, Texas — Hundreds of people gathered at the Texas State Capitol for the Texas Rally of Life on Saturday. This is the first rally since Roe v. Wade, a landmark abortion case. Governor Greg Abbott celebrated that decision and what his office has been able to achieve over the past few years as it works to ban abortion in Texas.

“We promised we would protect the life of every child in a heartbeat, and we did,” Gov. Abbott said. “I signed legislation that does just that. We passed legislation banning the shipping of abortion drugs in Texas. We promised abortion would be banned in Texas if Roe v. Wade would be tipped. It was overturned and I signed a law outlawing abortion in Texas.”

Speaking at the rally, the governor also highlighted what he described as efforts to protect the life of both the child and the mother by raising more than $100 million for the Alternatives to abortion Program.

“We must redouble these efforts to protect both the mother and the child,” he added. “But to be clear, and I must stress, none of this would have been possible without the thousands of advocates here today.”

Texas currently has a total ban on abortion, with no exceptions for rape or incest. Abortion advocates say it blocks access to health care, which is a human right.

“We should be able to make decisions about our bodies without government or interference with laws,” protester Nora Dr?pple said in October.

Opponents of abortion argue that there are other options when someone is raped, such as adoption.

“This is an unfortunate situation and we are sorry that this happened to you,” said Caleb Tuiasosopo. “But there are ways to take care of the baby. That doesn’t necessarily mean murdering them.”

Advocates agree that the fight for abortion is far from over. Meanwhile, anti-abortion activists celebrate the governor’s achievements in banning abortion in the state.
