Medical examiner IDs driver killed in early-morning crash with 18-wheeler

The Bexar County Medical Examiner has identified a man who was killed in a crash involving an 18-wheeler late last week.

Juan Leija, 44, died from multiple blunt force injuries he sustained in the crash, according to the ME.

The crash happened around 2:20 a.m., Friday, on North Weidner Road near Crosswinds Way, on the city’s Northeast Side.

Police said the driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured and no criminal charges are pending.

A male driver of a sedan is dead following a crash into an 18-wheeler early Friday morning, San Antonio police said.

The crash occurred around 2:20 a.m. on North Weidner Road near Crosswinds Way, not far from Wurzbach Parkway and Interstate 35 on the city’s Northeast Side.

According to police, the sedan was traveling westbound on the I-35 access road when an 18-wheeler traveling northbound on Weidner approached the intersection. That’s when, police say, as the 18-wheeler was going through the intersection with a green light, the sedan crashed into the big rig.

Police said there were no signs of the car breaking prior to the collision. The driver of the sedan suffered major injuries and was taken by EMS to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he later died.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured in the crash. No criminal charges are pending.

The name and age of the man killed have not been released. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.
