NIOSA Rain Rock hoisted at botanical garden in hopes of clear skies for holiday light display

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio could really use some decent rain but the San Antonio Botanical Garden (SABOT) is hoping at least for a few dry evenings as it enlists the help of the NIOSA Rain Rock.

After a soggy start to the holiday season, SABOT officials held a special ceremony Thursday to hang the rock and ward off unfavorable weather for the duration of Lightscape.

This is the second year Lightscape has returned to San Antonio. It’s a one-mile walking trail illuminated with hundreds of thousands of lights and various art displays, including a cathedral of lights and a flower forest.

“A Night in Old San Antonio,” commonly referred to as NIOSA, has hung the rain rock in a traditional ceremony that dates back to the 1970s. The four-night festival takes place downtown every year during Fiesta.

Tickets for Lightscape can be purchased online. Entry times are available every 15 minutes from 5:30 – 9 p.m and most guests finish the trail in 90 minutes. Prices for Lightscape vary depending on the date and time selected.
